The 50 and over senior curling “funspiel” was held this week at the Gallagher Centre in Yorkton. Rinks were from Langenburg, Melville, Saltcoats, and Tonkin area, as well as 13 rinks from Yorkton. The local rinks were made up just before the bonspiel.

The A event was won by the Satterthwaite rink consisting of Sheldon Knoll as third, Kevin Laycock second, and Doreen Haubrich as lead. They played the Peter Hutzul rink of Yorkton to win the bonspiel.

The B event was won by the Greg Herman rink of Melville, with Len Grant playing as third, Jerry Safronik second, and Naomi Herman lead. They beat the Ken Trowell rink of Saltcoats in the final game.

The C event was won by Dave Zbeetnoff rink of Yorkton. Third on his team was Gary Macza, Second Marilyn Woodrow, and Myrna Grunert who played lead, filling in for Norm Speerbrecker in the final game. They battled with the Bernie Molnar rink from Melville in that game.

The D event was won by the Al Ellingboe rink consisting of John Sharp as third, Dorothy Nabe second, and Bill Chupa as lead. They won over the Clark Anderson rink of Yorkton in the final game of that event.

This bonspiel is a curling mixer and the competitive spirit is very strong, but the main goal is the enjoyment of playing one of the “ice” games that has been played in Saskatchewan for over 100 years. The competition started on Sunday and ended on Friday with a great banquet catered by Ken Maduck, and dance with music by Ed Hickie.

Thanks goes out to the Yorkton businesses that helped us with this event.
