Thom Barker

When Thom Barker was 17, he took the What Colour is your Parachute test, which indicated he should be a newspaper reporter or editor. It took him more than 20 years and several career changes to get around to it, but in 2005 he took his first newspaper job in Smithers, BC covering crime and municipal politics for The Interior News. Now a multiple award-winning journalist, Thom is most proud of his CCNA Best Feature Story Award for his coverage of the death of Ian Bush, the 22-year old Houston, BC man who was shot and killed by Const. Paul Koester inside the Houston RCMP detachment in October 2005. Outside of work his passions include playing music, cricket, golf and federal politics. Thom lives in Yorkton with his wife and a menagerie of pets. They have three grown children and one grandchild scattered across the country.
