Thurs., Oct. 22, 2015, 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., Yorkton Public Library. Yorkton Teens, Adults Free! Author Lisa Guenther and singer-songwriter Best Kept Secret Girlfriend have teamed up to bring you a unique afternoon of music and readings. Lisa’s first novel, Friendly Fire, hit book stores this fall. Friendly Fire placed second in the Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild 2013 John V. Hicks Long Manuscript Awards. Best Kept Secret Girlfriend is Saskatoon-based singer-songwriter Carmen Loncar’s chronicles of forbidden love, new frontiers, shape-shifting identities, a journey through the wilderness, and ultimately, the return home. Her new album embraces a raw alternative country-folk sound with minimal instrumentation to highlight Carmen’s voice and her songs.

Parkland Search and Rescue will be holding a Community Awareness Barbeque at the Royal Ford location in Yorkton on Oct. 15, from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Local search and rescue members will be in attendance to answer any questions and to promote search and rescue in the Parkland area. The Canadian Federation of University Women, Yorkton will hold their regular monthly meeting on Oct. 27, 2015 at 7 p.m. at the Parkland College, Room 101 with Dr. Faye Myers as guest speaker. Dr. Myers will speak about Empowering Women through Education and will talk about how education can impact our lives. Everyone is invited to hear her presentation.

The Canadian Federation of University Women/Yorkton will hold their Fall Book Market at the Yorkton Co-op Grocery Store, 30 Argyle St. on Fri., Oct. 16, from 9:30 - 5:30 and Sat., Oct. 17 from 9:30 - 4:30. We will accept GENTLY used books (no encyclopedias or Readers Digest please), CD’s, DVD’s, board games and puzzles. Proceeds go to our local scholarship fund. Thank you for your support.

The Yorkton and District Horticultural Society will be hosting the Saskatchewan Horticultural Association Provincial Convention and AGM on Fri., Oct. 23 and Sat., Oct. 24, 2015 at St. Gerard’s Parish Complex, Yorkton. There will be a variety of interesting speakers including a flower arranging presentation by All About Flowers; gardening experiences by Warren Crossman; a presentation by Don Stein from the Godfrey Dean about “Garden Photography”, and a presentation by Sonja Pawliw about her Healing Garden. There will be a banquet on Friday night with entertainment by Jackie Guy. Everyone is welcome to attend, you do not have to belong to any horticultural society. The Yorkton Legion is on a fast track. There has been a significant increase in membership over the past year. Many of these are from the younger generation, which shows they support the aims and purpose of this organization. Saturday cribbage is under way, with new helpers for Tracy Cross. Darts & pool are being organized for league play, and Friday ‘Full Meals’, along with meat draws, have also started. Drop in to Gunners Lounge and enjoy an evening out with fellow members and friends. Next general meeting is on Wed., Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. See you there.

Volunteers Needed! The Canadian Red Cross is seeking volunteers for the Friendly Visiting Program for Seniors. Volunteers will be trained to provide weekly visits or phone calls to socially or geographically isolated seniors in Yorkton and surrounding area. One hour every other week is all that is required to provide social interaction with a senior  and peace of mind for family and caregivers.
