The Togo Figure Skating Club closes a different kind of season

The Togo Figure Skating Club completed another successful skating season - albeit a little different than the usual season during this pandemic.

The Togo Figure Skating Club completed another successful skating season - albeit a little different than the usual season during this pandemic. With 23 skaters enrolled this season, the program ran from January 2 to March 13, two days a week at the Togo Centennial Arena.

Skating on a natural ice surface, which was made by the Airriess family from Togo, there were challenges of maintaining COVID-19 regulations, extreme cold weather, and a couple of storms to contend with, however, we were able to complete another successful season.

Abiding by government restrictions, the club had to hire a new coach this season due to the previous coach being from Manitoba. Local figure skater, Kate Erhardt stepped up to the coaching position. Kate has been a skater in the Togo Figure Skating Club since she was three years old. Also a member of the Roblin Skating Club for the past few years, Kate’s skills earned her the Skate Canada Manitoba Regional Championship in 2018-2019.

A special addition this season was the hiring of local hockey player, Levi Erhardt, for hockey skills instruction for the interested experienced skaters one day a week. It proved to be very successful with younger skaters expressing an interest to join the program if offered next season.

Levi had been a skater in the Togo Figure Skating Club between the ages of three to twelve when he pursued his passion for hockey. He played hockey with Kamsack Flyers in novice, atom and peewee, then joined Yorkton Terriers for the last two years, playing U15 AA this past season.  He was happy to share his love of the game with the local skaters.

There were 19 skaters enrolled in Figure Skating and four skaters in Hockey Skills. Prior to the pandemic, the club would host a carnival to conclude the season and share the skills they had developed through the year with their family and community. However, with this season’s regulations, the club decided to not proceed with carnival and rather focus on further skill development.

Working with the Village of Togo to maintain COVID-19 regulations, the season was completed safely on March 12. The Togo Figure Skating Club would like to thank Sask Lotteries through the RM of Cote grant for their continued support.
