NIPAWIN — In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nipawin council meetings will be temporarily conducted through conference calls.

At the present time, only time sensitive items will be discussed by Nipawin council.

“We are all taking steps to minimize human to human contact. This is an effort to try to ensure everybody’s safety in that regard while still ensuring that the meeting will continue,” said Barry Elliott, Nipawin’s administrator.

Nipawin council isn’t the only local council who has been adapting, with Tisdale council moving their March 23 meeting to the Civic Centre auditorium in order to allow for the appropriate social distance between councilors.

For Nipawin council’s meeting on March 23, Elliott kept the town office open during the duration of the meeting for media or members of the public who wished to listen to the meeting.

Members of the public joining in by their own phones were discussed, but separate challenges were found.

“We got to be cautious because there’s only so much room on the lines and it’s problematic for people to participate,” he said.

Elliott said that he expects further discussions within Nipawin council on the best method of conducting the meetings in a way that the public can access them.

“That’s part of what we’ve been working on this week, to see if we could coordinate the best alternative.”

In the event a member of the public wishes to join the public portion of a Nipawin council meeting held by conference call, they are advised to contact the Town of Nipawin at (306) 862-9866 for further information.
