From window pane to ornaments

Fans of unique and interesting glass designs had plenty of opportunity to see what people can create at the Sunflower Fine Art and Craft Market.

Fans of unique and interesting glass designs had plenty of opportunity to see what people can create at the Sunflower Fine Art and Craft Market. Randy and Shirley Bergman of Uniquely Sculptured Glass in Little Bear Lake, SK brought their home-based business down to Sunflower.

One of the products the couple makes uses recycled window glass to make ornaments. A large sheet of window glass is cut into 2 ¼ x 2 ¼ squares and then hand-chipped individually. A hole is drilled near the top for stringing purposes; a vinyl stencil is placed on each ornament, and then sandblasted.

They also use the sandblasting process on wine glasses, which they personalize with different words and messages.

Ornaments and glasses can be personalized after this process with coloured gems and birthstones to really make a gift special for someone.

Featuring a balanced portion of funny sayings and heartfelt messages for every occasion, the business caters to a diverse range of customers.

Originally, the Bergmans were involved with stained glass, but fell in love with sandblasting.

“I took a sandblasting class many years ago. I loved it; my husband fell in love with it…We are retired, and this is our hobby. It has taken over a bit of our lives,” states Shirley.

Recycling is also a large focus for Uniquely Sculptured Glass, collecting glass sheets from old, unused windows as well as old windows from neighbours in their area.

The couple is happy to have their hand-made projects pass down generation from generation in other families as part of their Christmas traditions, and wine-tasting occasions.
