Funding for centre big part of year

August 2013

Parkland College rolled out an expansion of its Adult Basic Education programs and services on Aug. 20 with online General Education Development (GED) preparation classes. The course prepares students to write the GED exam, a credential accepted by some employers and institutions as evidence of a basic level of education. Many students are finding success independently through convenient classes delivered over the internet.

The College welcomed a new Director of Finance & Administration. Mustansar Nadeem assumed the role to lead the accounting, finance, registration, information technology, and facility management functions for the College. Nadeem is responsible for the planning and development of the college's fiscal direction.

September 2013

Parkland College awarded over $53,000 in entrance scholarships to 27 students from across East Central Saskatchewan. It was the highest dollar total ever awarded at the entrance scholarship ceremony.

The College teamed up with Parkland Regional Library on Sept. 26 to co-host an Essential Skills Day celebration in Yorkton. The event was staged as an opportunity to share the importance of Essential Skills with employers and the public. There are nine Essential Skills as defined by the Government of Canada: reading, document use, numeracy, writing, oral communication, working with others, thinking, computer use, and continuous learning.

October 2013

Premier Brad Wall visited the main campus in Yorkton on Oct. 15 to announce that the Government of Saskatchewan is providing $10 million in funding to support construction of the Trades and Technology Centre. "Saskatchewan is experiencing remarkable growth, which will result in a number of employment opportunities, many of which will be in the skilled trades," Wall said. "The new Trades and Technology Centre will increase the number of graduates in many highly skilled areas that are needed in Saskatchewan and will make it possible for students from the Yorkton area to learn closer to home."

Parkland College welcomed four new members to its Board of Governors. David Cisyk (Esterhazy), Ernie Iluk (Melville), Raymond Sass (Yorkton), and Darrell Sobkow (Yorkton) joined the board. Sally Bishop (Kamsack) and D. Lydia Cyr (Fort Qu'Appelle) retained the positions they've held since 2009 and 2010, respectively.

November 2013

The Mosaic Company announced an investment of $1.225 million in support of the Trades and Technology Centre. Thanks to Mosaic's gift, contributions to the College's capital campaign now total over $4.79 million.

Good Spirit School Division, Christ The Teacher Catholic Schools, and Parkland College co-hosted Career Explorations 2013 in Yorkton on Nov. 13. The fourth annual education and career fair encompasses East Central Saskatchewan and is one of the most vibrant education and job fairs in the province. About 80 exhibitors from Saskatchewan, Western Canada, and North Dakota attended this event. More than 2,000 high school students from Yorkton and the surrounding area visited their booths throughout the day.

During the week of Nov. 18-22, Parkland College marked International Education Week, an opportunity to raise awareness and understanding of international education and its significant benefits to our social, economic, and cultural well-being. The College's program for international students has grown since being introduced in 2009-10. About 20 students from India, the United States, and Fiji were on campus for the fall semester, with another 30 to 45 internationals expected to arrive in the New Year.

December 2013

Parkland College welcomed friends of the Trades and Technology Centre to a donor recognition event at the Painted Hand Casino. The event, sponsored by Key Chevrolet Cadillac Buick GMC and Yorkton Toyota, was organized so that the College could say thank you to the dozens of businesses, organizations, and community groups that have given to the Trades and Technology Centre capital campaign in the past 18 months.
