Soon the spotlight for the best of Saskatchewan country music will be shining on Yorkton.

The city will be hosting the 26th Saskatchewan Country Music Association awards April 24-to-26.

“The Saskatchewan Country Music Awards are hosted in different cities and towns in Saskatchewan each year,” explained SCMA president Murray Yung in a past interview with this newspaper. “For 2015, Yorkton was chosen because there is local talent present, we have a volunteer base from which to mount the event and the city has facilities and venues suitable to hosting this type of an event …

“We also choose communities in which our event can make a strong and positive economic and tourism impact for local businesses.”

The awards ceremony is the highlight of the three days of activities, taking place at the Nexera Flexihall in the Gallagher Centre Sunday evening. The public is welcome to attend the banquet and awards with its ‘Country Chic’. Tickets are on sale now online through Picatic by following the links found on the SCMA website ( www.scma.sk.ca ). They are $50, or are included as part of an all-weekend early bird package ($110).

“The event is more than the awards ceremony,” said Yung. The SCMA Awards weekend includes development workshops and seminars, performances, the President’s Gala and of course the Awards ceremony.”

Other events scheduled for the weekend are showcases Saturday and Sunday at the Parkland Room at the Painted Hand Casino. Sunday’s showcase will include brunch, with music focusing on gospel and youth performers, while Saturday’s showcase will focus on new artists and roots artist in a cafe setting.

The Flexihall will also be the site of a cabaret Friday, with local performer Samara Yung and male vocalist Alex Runions both doing 90-minute sets.

While country music fans are encouraged to purchase their tickets online early, there will be limited at-the-door tickets available for events other than the awards night and president’s banquet.

In addition, local organizers could still use some additional volunteers for the weekend, as well as sponsorships would be welcomed. Those wanting information, or to help out can call 306-783-2114.
