Writer's Alliance celebrate anniversary

For an entire quarter-century, the Parkland Writers Alliance has been a continuing organization here in Yorkton.

For an entire quarter-century, the Parkland Writers Alliance has been a continuing organization here in Yorkton. Fall, 1985, the Saskatchewan Writers Guild placed Mick Burrs here, as Writer-in-Residence, the group beginning that October, with nine members, growing in later years to over 20 members. Of the original nine, Francis Stelmaszak, Joyce Bagley and Terri Lefebvre Prince were on last year's membership roll, along with Mick Burrs, now of Toronto, holding a life membership. We have long time members as well, who have enjoyed this unique club.

Over the years the group has featured workshops and readings by well-known authors, including local author Elmer McInnes. One recent season we hosted Sharon Butala and Donna Caruso.

The Parkland Writers Alliance is one of the oldest still-running writing groups in Saskatchewan. We have always met for our regular meetings at the Yorkton Public Library, but because of temporary library closing due to the July flood, we will meet at the temporary library location at the Parkland Mall.

This 25th anniversary season, 2010-2011, we plan at least one workshop, along with anticipated writings and readings of members, a Christmas supper and concert, our By The Fireside event in February and the annual June Wind-up picnic.

The group is open to all writers, those just starting out, already published, etc with monthly meetings through June, 2011, for a membership fee of $10.00.

We welcome new writers to help celebrate our 25th year. Come. Share your work with our non-critical, encouraging group.

Date & Time: Thursday, October 7 at 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Place: Public Library. The temporary location at the Parkland Mall, next to Sobey's.
