Muenster School reno, new Lanigan school on Horizon's wishlist

MUNESTER, LANIGAN, WATROUS — A major renovation of Muenster School, a new school in Lanigan and a renovation of the Watrous high school is on the Horizon School Division’s major projects wishlist.

Each year, the provincial education ministry asks each school division to submit up to three major capital projects. They’ll then consider which projects will be funded in future provincial budgets.

The Muenster School renovation, which would cost over $1 million, was ranked No. 1 on the list. The reno, which has been on the division’s list for three years, would see a relocation of the school’s office, as well as move the industrial arts program in-house.

Muenster School last saw a major renovation back in 1978.

In Lanigan, Horizon wants to build a new school on property it owns in the town, replacing the existing elementary and high school.

“We have close to about 380 children attending Lanigan in two buildings that are nearing end of life, so they need some response,” said Kevin Garinger, the division’s director of education.

That project was ranked No. 2 on the list. It was first added last year.

The final project, added this year, was a major renovation of Watrous’ Winston High School, which has not seen a major renovation since the late 1980s.

“The school needs a facelift big time and so we're hopeful that we'll receive some capital project funding to help support that school,” Garinger said. “It's a growing community, a growing school.”

To strengthen the division's case to the provincial government, they have architecture firm aodbt examining all three projects.

The division's board of education voted in favour of the list at its Feb. 12 meeting.
