The Western Canadian Baseball League met on Sunday, but did not make a final decision on the status of the 2020 WCBL season. However they did establish a timeline that will guide their decisions this spring.

In a press release they said that for the full 2020 season to continue, the board decided on a date of May 2nd for a final go-ahead to occur. There are also ideas about a shortened season that would start either on or around Father’s Day or on or around Canada Day. The Governors have agreed that if the health and travel restrictions are still such that the League cannot confirm a start date by early June 2020, the season will be cancelled.

Due to logistical differences between communities in the league, the League understands if a franchise or two have to accept and emergency leave of absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation. If a later start date is needed, a shorted schedule will be made.

The League hopes to release an update on or around April 20.

The Weyburn Beavers have already taken a huge hit because of the pandemic as they had to postpone their Sports Dinner that was supposed to be on April 24. With a start date for the season still not being announced, the Beavers organization may not be able to reschedule the dinner in time which will be a big loss of revenue for the team. If so, the community will definitely need to step up and help to make sure the beloved Beavers can play this year.
