Angela and Kyle Sereda don’t spend much time apart. The married couple live together with their daughter and several dachshunds. They use their free time to volunteer with various communtiy groups and to play golf.

But they’ve spent the most time together in ambulances. They’ve done everything from transporting pregnant women to responding to fatal car crashes. They work with EMS in Moose Jaw.

They’ve worked together for nearly 20 years, helping people across Saskatchewan. While some people might find it strange to work with their spouse daily, particularly in a high-pressure job, the Seredas find it fairly normal.

“It’s all we’ve known,” Angela said.

Kyle and Angela, both from Saskatchewan, took similar routes to becoming paramedics. Angela, originally from Regina, studied EMT work in Bismarck, North Dakota, before moving to Strasbourg.

Kyle, a native Yorktonite, followed his twin brother’s footsteps and studied paramedicine in Regina.

“I found a lot of self-satisfaction in helping people,” he said.

Angela and Kyle’s paths crossed in Yorkton while they were working with Crestvue Ambulance Service in 1998. They moved to Big River before settling into Moose Jaw in 2009.

Kyle, whose family still lives in Yorkton, found Moose Jaw to have a similar feel to his hometown, describing it as a small town on steroids.

Kyle and Angela serve as the chief and deputy operators, respectively, for Moose Jaw and District EMS, handling duties behind the desk and in the back of ambulances.

Due to their relationship and their years of experience, they’re able to accomplish a lot as a team.

“We divide and conquer,” Angela said, referring to their shared responsibilities.

“We’re different practitioners,” she added. “I’m more laid back. He’s always been more serious.

“We compliment each other.”

The Sederas admit it can sometimes be challenging to take their work home with them, but they see their relationship as a source of strength.

“Having a spouse in same profession helps when you’re working through what you’ve seen,” Kyle said. “It makes a difference.”

Angela and Kyle stay busy outside of work by helping with First Aid education, community work, and youth mentorship.

For Angela, the key to their success boils down to one simple ingredient.

“We’re best friends,” she said.
