The Yorkton community is reeling over the deaths of two area young people and serious injury to another following a head-on collision September 24.

The crash occurred just after 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon when a car southbound on Hwy 10 just south of Yorkton collided with a northbound vehicle, a press release stated.

Police are not releasing any details including the victims’ names, but Gary Liebrecht, the grandfather of one of the victims, 17-year-old Jordan Stoll, talked to CBC on the weekend saying the entire family was in shock.

Another 18-year-old male, who had been in the car with Stoll, was airlifted by STARS air ambulance to hospital in Regina where he is reportedly recovering from undisclosed injuries.

The 29-year-old driver and lone occupant of the other car was also killed.

Under rainy and grey conditions, the highway was closed for approximately five hours while police investigated.

Mandy Maier, an F Division RCMP spokesperson from the Yorkton area said it could take up to several months for a traffic reconstructionist to complete the investigation.

She said no charges are being considered at this time.

Liebrecht told CBC his understanding of the collision was that the car his grandson was in hit a large puddle, lost control and veered into the oncoming traffic.

Maier would not speculate on whether the wet conditions were a factor, noting there are many factors to consider.
