Double win for Second Hand Smoke

At Amateur BBQ Competition at Yorkton Rhythm 'n Ribs

As the old saying goes; third time’s a charm.

At least it held true for the Second Hand Smoke crew at this year’s Amateur BBQ Competition that was part of Rhythm 'n Ribs today at the Yorkton Exhibition Grounds.

The local barbecue team pulled off a double win, topping the Chef’s Choice category with a combination bacon wrapped chicken, and a cup of macaroni and cheese.

Kelly Hancock, spokesperson for the winning team said their combo for Chef’s Choice is one they make often.

“It’s kind of our go to,” he said. “You come over on a weekend that’s what we’d make for you.”

Cosmos Gator BBQ was second in the Chef’s Challenge with pork belly ends, while Team Traeger (Logan Stevens), was third with a chocolate zucchini cake baked on the grill.

Second Hand Smoke was back on top in the rib category which organizer Ron Balacko had termed “the king of categories” in his preamble to the presentations.

On the rib side Second Hand Smoke topped team RCM who finished second for a second straight year, and In Good Taste from Togo who were third after winning the trophy in both 2017 and 2018.

Hancock said they didn’t do a whole lot different this year when it came to their ribs.

“It was pretty much the same thing,” he said, adding it often comes down to the taste of the particular people doing the judging. “Sometimes were last, and sometimes we do good,” he said.
