A police investigation into the crystal meth trade in Yorkton resulting in five arrests last week.

On October 11, RCMP officers searched two vehicles and executed warrants on two residences that turned up a significant amount of methamphetamine; an undisclosed amount of cash, seized as proceeds of crime; and other evidence of trafficking.

Two Yorkton men, Anthony Mik Millham (26) and Scott Kenneth Dobson (32) were charged with trafficking, possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of the proceeds of crime.

A 26-year-old woman, Nicole Tumack of Regina, was charged with possession, breach of probation and breach of an undertaking.

Two other unnamed individuals were also arrested and charged with simple possession, but were released on a police recognizance with a promise to appear in court at a later date.

On October 12, a Yorkton judge remanded Dobson and Millham in custody pending second appearances today and tomorrow respectively.

Tumack was also remanded, but was later released only to be picked up again for breaching her release conditions by driving an impounded vehicle on October 14. At that time she received another possession charge, but at a hearing October 17, the Crown dropped that charge and again released her after she pleaded guilty to the breach and driving charges for which she received $400 in fines.

The Court heard she also has outstanding charges in Moose Jaw.

Crystal meth is a booming industry in Saskatchewan. Although the numbers are not clear for Yorkton, anecdotally arrests appear to be climbing. In Saskatoon, methamphetamine busts doubled last year.

The Saskatoon police chief says the drug, which is notoriously addictive, also leads to spikes in other types of crime, particularly property crimes as addicts attempt to support their habits and violence as it promotes paranoia and psychotic episodes.
