Habitat Canada releases national writing contest winners Over $3000 raised in Southern Saskatchewan to build homes in Regina, Yorkton, Estevan and Moose Jaw

A program where students  participated in this year’s Meaning of Home contest, saw great support.

A national writing contest in support of Habitat for Humanity Canada, each student entry helped earn a $10 donation to the local Habitat in their community.

This year, over 8,000 students from Grades 4, 5 and 6 shared what home means to them.

In communities throughout Southern Saskatchewan, students helped raise over $3000 by entering the contest – donations that will help us build more decent and affordable homes in Regina, Estevan, Yorkton and Moose Jaw.

“Thank you to each and every student and classroom that participated in this contest. We are grateful for the heartfelt stories and poems submitted by our local students. These students have truly made a difference to hardworking families in their communities who need a hand up to break the cycle of poverty through affordable homeownership,” said Kelly Holmes-Binns, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Regina.

Three grand prize winners and nine runners up were announced, and you can read all the winning entries at meaningofhome.ca. Each grand prize winner won a $25,000 grant to direct to a local Habitat for Humanity and each runner up won a $5,000 grant.

“I want to congratulate all the winners, but I also want to thank every student who entered and shared what home means to them,” said Mark Rodgers, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Canada. “Each and every one of you has made a tangible difference in your community – helping raise funds and awareness that will allow us to serve more families.” The Meaning of Home contest would not have been possible without the support of founding sponsor Genworth Canada, awards sponsor Revera Inc. and judging sponsor The Silver Hotel Group.

"The Meaning of Home contest encourages students to become engaged and compassionate community members.  At the same time, the program educates and inspires them to learn about the issue of affordable housing. Since this contest started back in 2007, we've provided over $1.2 million in funding to Habitat for Humanity nation-wide to empower youth to change this world for the better”, said Stuart Levings, President and CEO, Genworth Canada.

Keep an eye on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages for when we announce more details later this year regarding the 2020 Meaning of Home contest.
