The City of Yorkton officially unveiled its brand-new parking meters on Monday, making them fully operational.

Thirteen on-street meters have been placed throughout the city, while pay stations have been put in the four City-owned parking lots downtown. They were installed over a series of days.

At the end of 2016, city council voted to replace the ageing parking meters with a new batch.

“The old meters were becoming obsolete,” said Nicole Baptist, the Bylaw Coordinator with the City of Yorkton. Baptist has been working closely with the parking meter project.

The new meters are completely solar-powered, which freed them from electrical cables.

“[There was a] flexibility to place them anywhere,” Baptist said. “It was a conscious decision [to get solar-powered meters].”

The on-street meters allow users to park for 15 minutes. The parking lot pay stations are for longer stays. Both types have detailed prompts that walk users through the pay process.

The new meters now accept Visa or Mastercard. Coins are also still accepted. The meters do not take debit cards.
