Recently, the Town of Wynyard celebrated the official grand opening of its new $1.2 million centre for SARCAN and other recycling services, an infrastructure project funded in part by the federal and provincial governments.
“We are proud to have invested in this recycling centre, which will help protect the environment and promote economic development in Wynyard,” said Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. “Our government is investing in infrastructure to support economic growth, create well-paid middle-class jobs and improve the quality of life in communities across Saskatchewan.”
“The Government of Saskatchewan is proud to invest more than $380,000 into this important project for the Town of Wynyard and its citizens,” Government Relations Minister Warren Kaeding said. “Key infrastructure investments improve a community’s quality of life, while projects like this one help make them environmentally sustainable.”
“Funding from the governments of Canada and Saskatchewan was much appreciated, as collaborative infrastructure programs involving federal, provincial and municipal governments helps make projects like this one a reality for Wynyard,” Wynyard Mayor Albert Boylak said. “I also want to thank SARCAN for their role in our new recycle centre.”
One side of the new Wynyard Comprehensive Recycle Centre at 207 Avenue A East houses a SARCAN depot, where the public can drop off deposit beverage containers, household paint, and many electronics. It began operating in January 2018.
“SARCAN is pleased to work with the Town of Wynyard on this important recycling initiative,” SARC/SARCAN Executive Director Amy McNeil said. “The new recycle centre is modern, bright, and a model for us to grow into the future. We truly appreciate the partnership between the Town of Wynyard, the Government of Saskatchewan and the Government of Canada to make this vision a reality. We are thrilled to be part of this new state-of-the-art facility.”
The other side of the centre is where the Town of Wynyard has other household and commercial recycling, which accepts items such as cardboard, tin, and newspapers. It began operating in December 2017.
Construction on the centre began in April 2017. Under the New Building Canada Fund - Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component - Small Communities Fund, the Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan each contributed $383,343 toward the project. The Town of Wynyard was responsible for all remaining costs and owns the centre.
SARCAN was founded in 1988 by SARC, the province-wide association that provides supports and services to organizations that serve people with disabilities throughout Saskatchewan.
