Solid waste management, drainage and rural crime were three key topics addressed at the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) Division 4 meeting on June 13, 2019, in Kelvington. Every June meetings are held throughout the province to provide an opportunity for members to get a more in depth look at key issues affecting their division.

Solid Waste Management- The ministry is responsible for regulating waste management, compliance, and the overall protection of human health and the environment.  Solid waste management and effective waste management practices are important to municipalities across the province.  Jeff Dereniwski, Environmental Protection Officer, Landfills Section, Ministry of Environment was on hand to speak about solid waste management in the province.

Drainage- SARM recognizes drainage issues effect landowners, producers, municipalities, and the environment.  SARM continues to meet with the Ministry to address members’ concerns on the amendments required to better serve the interests of rural Saskatchewan.

Doug Johnson, Executive Director, Special Projects, Water Security Agency, was in attendance to speak about drainage management in the province.

Rural Crime- Rural crime remains top of mind for SARM.  SARM is encouraged by the expansion of the rural crime watch program and the partnership between FSIN, RCMP, and SUMA for the Saskatchewan Crime Alert Network- a mass notification system alerting residents to criminal activity.

C/ Supt. Alfredo Bangloy, OIC Criminal Operations, RCMP provided an overview of RCMP operations and priorities in the province.
