The Valley View Hotel in Tantallon completely burned to the ground in the early hours Thursday..

The Rocanville Fire Department responded to the fire taking the call at about 2:20 a.m. April 25, said Chief Owen Wilson.

“By the time we got there everything was fully engulfed,” he said, noting it is a 20-25 minute drive from Rocanville to Tantallon.

The building was also old, and covered in tin which led to a quicker burn.

In terms of age, Wilson said it is presently unclear exactly how old the building was.

“One person was saying it was built in the ‘30s,” he said, adding another person suggested “it was the ‘50s.” There was an addition added in the early 2000s.

With the building fully engaged by the time the department arrived Wilson said “we just tried to get out what we could,” said Wilson.

The firefighters also focused attention on preventing the fire spreading.

“There was a pretty strong breeze,” said Wilson, adding there was a “big grass field” across the road in the direction of the wind, which meant ash and embers were blowing toward the grass, so they had to make sure a wild grass fire did not get started.

No injuries were reported and it is still unknown what caused the fire

Tantallon is located in the Qu'Appelle Valley about 32 km east of Round Lake.
