Two Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) partner families are now official homeowners after a special ceremony held in Yorkton today. The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), supported the families’ achievement of homeownership by providing $130,000 toward the costs of construction.
“We are proud to partner with Habitat for Humanity to help families in need reach the goal of homeownership,” Rural and Remote Health Minister and Yorkton MLA Greg Ottenbreit said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer. “We sincerely thank the Yorkton Habitat chapter and their dedicated volunteers, for their work on this to help reduce poverty by providing families with access to safe, quality, and affordable homes.”
“The construction of this duplex was the first of its kind here in Yorkton,” Habitat for Humanity Yorkton Chapter Chairman George Plews said. “We are so excited to welcome these families home and to have completed our fifth build. The support of the community is outstanding and we are excited for future Habitat builds.”
“Together, Habitat for Humanity Regina and the Yorkton Chapter continue to break the cycle of poverty by providing opportunities for low-income families province-wide,” Habitat for Humanity Regina CEO Kelly Holmes-Binns said. “We are proud of the Yorkton community for their hard work and dedication to this build and are thrilled to hand over the keys to two families today.”
Since March 2009, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed $7.85 million to Habitat Saskatchewan chapters for low- to moderate-income families across the province in the 13 communities of Duck Lake, Fort Qu’Appelle, Humboldt, Lloydminster, Melfort, Moose Jaw, Nipawin, Battleford region, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Weyburn and Yorkton.
Habitat’s innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing, and to achieve their homeownership goals. Each partner family selected by Habitat contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home, or other Habitat homes. The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership.
