A 50-year-old area man currently serving an intermittent sentence for possession of child pornography is now facing methamphetamine trafficking charges.

Karl Vopni made a brief appearance in Yorkton Provincial Court January 9 where he was remanded in custody pending the preparation of a bail verification report.

Richard Yaholnitsky, appearing as duty counsel, requested the report investigate the possibility of release on electronic monitoring.

Vopni pleaded guilty in October 2016 to one count of possessing child pornography after police found 970 photos and 42 videos in the ceiling of his Yorkton residence in September 2015. At sentencing defence attorney David Rusnak argued for the mandatory minimum sentence of 90 days based on the contention the items had belonged to Vopni’s deceased brother.

The Crown agreed to allow Vopni to serve the 90 days on weekends followed by three years probation.

The current case was adjourned to January 17 for a bail hearing.
