A man accused of modifying and trafficking weapons for use by street gangs in Saskatoon remains in custody.
Brett Karol, 29, appeared in Saskatoon Provincial Court Nov. 23 on about 80 charges and the matter was adjourned.
Karol, and Corey Amber Paddy, 26, were arrested earlier this year. On April 9, 2020, Saskatoon Police responded to a disturbance in the 2400 block of Arlington Avenue after they received reports that a man was banging on the windows and doors of a home in the area.
When police arrived they located the suspect in a vehicle nearby and conducted a traffic stop. They searched the vehicle and found three firearms – one loaded – as well as cocaine, methamphetamine and cash.
The Saskatoon Police Guns and Gangs Unit became involved and searched a residence in the 1000 block of Avenue H North. They found a sawed-off rifle, rifle parts that were broken down, and a money counter.
A search was then conducted at a storage unit in the 3900 block of Wanuskewin Road on April 12. Police found five firearms, ammunition and modified firearm parts.
Saskatoon Police say they believe the weapons were acquired, modified and trafficked for use by members of street gangs in Saskatoon.
Paddy was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 25 to elect how she wants to be tried.
Karol’s next appearance in Saskatoon Provincial Court is scheduled for Nov. 30 to enter a plea and elect how he wants to be tried.
