Coffee with Cops Staff Sergeant Jeff Simpson, commander of the Yorkton RCMP municipal detachment chats with members of the public at Dairy Queen Thursday morning. The meeting was the inaugural edition of a new community policing initiative dubbed “Coffee with Cops” designed to foster ties between residents and police and vice versa. “We want to show the community we’re here, we’re in the community, our kids go to the same schools as [yours], we walk our dogs in the same parks, we grocery shop at the local stores,” said Cst. Kristen Guspodarchuk. “We want to be approachable to people.” She said community outreach is part and parcel of the job of policing. Dairy Queen will host every month on the third Thursday, while McDonalds will host on the first Thursday starting April 6 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Both establishments are footing the bill for the coffee. Coffee with Cops started in the United States in 2011 and has since spread to many police services in Canada including big cities such as Montreal and Toronto.Thom Barker
