100 years of service Area Catholics gathered Saturday to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate. The order was founded in 1892 in western Ukraine and first came to Canada when co-foundress, Sister Josaphata Hordashevska, sent four Sisters to Canada in 1902 to minister to Ukrainian immigrants. From Edmonton, where they first landed, they spread out to various other locales in Canada including Yorkton where, in 1916, they founded Sacred Heart Institute, a boarding school and orphanage, which officially opened January 11, 1917. The celebration over the weekend included a Divine Liturgy Saturday afternoon followed by supper at St. Gerard’s Parish Hall.Thom Barker
