Stackhouse Soapbox - Weighing in on the attack in Edmonton

Terror attacks keep getting a little closer to home, with Saturday’s event in Edmonton being the closest yet.

Terror attacks keep getting a little closer to home, with Saturday’s event in Edmonton being the closest yet. As I surfed through various media reports I am left with even less confidence in journalism than I had even a week ago and I’m getting really weary of any statement Justin Trudeau makes.

We will start with the media, that said ‘A moving van struck four pedestrians’. What’s your mental image of this? Do you think of a terrorist ploughing people on the street like mosquitoes, or is your first thought of a van that must be out of control for some unknown reason and perhaps this is an accident? We just refuse to call this what it really is for some crazy, unknown reason. It’s just the latest example of political correctness that’s out of control.

To me, as soon as you use the term ‘extreme’, you are letting mainstream Muslims off the hook and that’s fair. Not all Muslims are terrorists; and people like me who speak out against this nonsense are not racist even though some of you may want to call me one. I have news for you: call me what you want, but I know what I am and racist isn’t it unless you feel that wanting to keep Canada safe and free from terror is racist. I’ve long become immune to that name.  It’s way overused and the impact, to me, is gone.

But, it’s very important we don’t label all Muslims as terrorists.  Doing so is a form of racism. But, we do have to call this what it is and we need the help of Muslims to eradicate this disease. It’s no different than the fact we need white people to stomp out the racism against black people. Until enough non-racist whites take care of their own backyard, we are always going to have a problem in the race war. When it comes to terrorism, the best way to deal with it is for Muslims to call it out and go to war with those extremists who use their religion as a front to kill people. In the wake of what’s gone on in the NFL with regards to anthems and racism, there was a very popular comment that we can’t eliminate racism until white people are made to feel uncomfortable.  Well, I’m applying the same logic here. We can’t get rid of terrorism until mainstream Muslims are made to feel uncomfortable enough to do something about the hateful intolerant extremists in their religion who give really good people a bad name.

As for Trudeau, he released a short paragraph (that could have been stolen from a script issued by leaders of Germany, France, or England) proclaiming outrage. To put this in perspective, he spent twenty minutes on a speech to the UN about two weeks ago talking about the shame of Canada and its history. To me, there was sincere outrage in his voice when he condemned Canada for how it came to being. A three-line paragraph using the word ‘outrage’ is empty to me. Furthermore, there was a quote from Trudeau that said, ‘We must remain vigilant against…’. This is complete PR spin. There is nowhere anywhere at anytime where Trudeau has shown he is willing to be ‘vigilant against’.  He’s even announced, publicly, that Canada is a welcoming country and encourages people who have extreme religious Muslim beliefs to make a new life here. Let’s not forget he paid a terrorist $10.5-million this summer.

With regards to the self-shaming Trudeau did in his UN speech, I had a First Nations acquaintance tell me one time that Canada would be a better place for their people if the country adopted much of the Muslim culture and rules. I realize this is a very unpopular thing to say, but I can tell you that however bad First Nations people feel they have it under our current government set up; it would be far worse if our leaders came from an extreme Muslim background. And that’s all I will say about that.

Perhaps this analogy on our own stupidity can sum it up best: we put up netting around hockey rinks to prevent errant pucks from striking fans. Millions and millions of fans have, safely, watched hockey games without being hit by a puck; but there has been a case where a child attending an NHL game was hit and killed. In the name of safety, these new rules surrounding netting were installed to protect us even though millions of us don’t need them. Sure, the odd person may die but the number of fans who are killed compared to fans who enjoy the game, safely, net free is miniscule.  Are a lot of people being hurt and killed in terrorist attacks? I’d say more than those who are killed with stray pucks, but look what we did to save people from stray pucks.  What are we doing to save people from terror attacks? The prosecution rests.

Someone joked I should name myself as a nice person to see if anyone notices, but I’m not doing that today.  Instead: Becky Harris, Brad Hickman, Dick Onslow, Casey O’Brien, and Audrey Nagy are the nice people of note this week.
