The Spring Arts Night, featuring the Yorkton Regional High School bands, concert choir and solo performances was held on Apr. 12 at the Anne Portnuff Theatre. Among those performing were ukulele and song by Abby Fichtner and Katelyn Smuk, Megan Kirby on flute, a rendition of Hallelujah by Breanna Rodgers, Ethan Kameniecki performing a piano solo, and the choir doing Lead Me Home in memory of the Humboldt Broncos.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake fundraiser was held at the Yorkton Bowl Arena over the weekend. The annual event raised just over $25,400, which was earmarked for Yorkton and area mentoring programs.

The Canada 150 Fall Fundraising Concert raised $2,000, for the Yorkton Regional High School Anne Portnuff Theatre seats. Participants in the concert event included the Yorkton Community Adult Band and Community Choir, Yorkton Regional High School concert bands and choir, Diamond Willow aboriginal singers and First Nation powwow dancers, 2831 – 64th Field Battery Royal Canadian Army Cadets, #17 Yorkton Squadron Cadets, Yorkton Navy League #103 Margaree Cadets, Troyanda Ukrainian Dancer Ensemble and members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. St. Paul Lutheran Church held a quilts and handicrafts sale, along with strawberry shortcake, tea, and coffee, on Apr. 14 in Yorkton. Proceeds were designated to Canadian Lutheran World Relief.

Apr. 10 was a big day for Yorkton Retired Senior Crib and Pool Players member Harvey Wegner. Sitting at the cribbage table, he found himself with three fives and the jack of spades, and then saw the five of spades turn up to give him a perfect crib hand of 29. A check of the Internet suggested the odds of getting a perfect 29 hand in a two-player game are one in 216,580. The odds of getting a perfect 29 hand in a three- or-four player game are one in 649,740.

Sliding Hills Charolais of Canora held its 12th annual bull sale on Apr. 12 at their farm. The bulls went under the gavel of auctioneer Michael Fleury. TH HD 14Y’ which sold for $11,750, selling to Martens Cattle Co./Glenbush & Bricney Stock Farm of Maidstone, SK. being the high seller. Circle Cee Charolais of Lamont, AB., also paid $10,500 for ‘SHSH Rave 24E’. Overall 23 bulls grossed $123,700 for an average of $5380.

The 12th annual Blue Collar Bull Sale was held on Apr. 14 at Heartland Livestock in Yorkton with bulls from Northern View Angus at Neudorf, SK, Parkwood Farm at Yorkton and Swan Hills Ranch at Swan River, MB, going under the gavel of auctioneer Clayton Hawryluk. The high seller was ‘Swan Hills Easy Decision 77E’ from Swan Hills Ranch. It sold to Shawn and Patty Smith, Rocking S Ranch for $13,250. The high seller from Parkwood Farms was ‘Parkwood South Dakota 20E’ which sold to K5 River Ranch, Canora, SK for $8500. ‘Northern View Grand Slam 103E’ was high seller at $7750, from Northern View Angus. It sold to Calvin Powell, Youngstown, AB. The sale average was $5024 with bulls sold from Alberta to Quebec with continued support from the Yorkton and surrounding area.

If there’s one thing Austin Riley has always been passionate about, it’s racing. He now tours the world with his father Jason (pictured) who tells his story of being diagnosed with autism, going from troubled youth to talented racing driver who also teaches people about what it’s like to live with autism. He was at Yorkdale School on Apr. 13.
