Hudson Bay encouraging everyone to vacation local this summer

Even with last week being Tourism Week in Saskatchewan, the Town of Hudson Bay has spent the last six weeks encouraging people to think local this summer.

Even with last week being Tourism Week in Saskatchewan, the Town of Hudson Bay has spent the last six weeks encouraging people to think local this summer.

Jeanine Holowatuik, the town’s community development director, said they recently launched their new Hudson Bay logo and their “Think Local First. Explore Local First. Be #HudsonBayProud” campaign.

During times of business uncertainty, communicating with the public has been crucial in promoting shopping locally, Holowatuik said.

For people coming into town for various reasons, Holowatuik said they want to encourage people to explore before they leave.

“We have so many opportunities to explore nature, and there's so many communities that are within a one to two hour range that haven't come out our way. We're trying to promote that in a way that is safe during these times.”

Part of promoting the area has also been creating things for people to do.

One of those activities is geocaching, in which participants use a GPS device to find hidden containers cached at specific co-ordinates. Holowatuik said geocaching is a fun activity that just takes an app with GPS capabilities and some sense of exploration.

“That is something that's a unique, different ecotourism idea where you're going out and you're just exploring in nature with a set of GPS co-ordinates and something's going to be there for you to find.”

Holowatuik has been placing geocaches around town for the last few years. The goal is to add some more for the 2020 season, making it a total of 30 for the area.

With the beauty of the natural area surrounding Hudson Bay, including the provincial forest and three rivers meeting, Holowatuik said there is ample opportunity for people to find travel options close to home and ample opportunity for the town to promote those options.

“Something like this is an opportunity for people that have looked beyond Saskatchewan for their travel plan is going to provide them that opportunity to travel within Saskatchewan travel to the rural areas to see things that really aren't that far away.”
