Local 4-H group goes above and beyond usual donation in 2019

This fall, the Good Spirit Beef 4-H Club did more than just provide its annual financial donation towards our local Food Bank.

In May the club members decided to get together and grow a garden, from which the produce would be donated in the fall to the local food banks. The garden plot was graciously donated and maintained by the Macdonald family of Invermay. We planted seven gallons of potatoes and two packages of carrots. Given the dry start we had to the growing season, the garden got a late start.

But it soon turned around and flourished with success, and our club members got together to harvest the garden on a cool September day. We were shocked when we weighed the many bags of potatoes and carrots. We produced 709 lb. of potatoes and 163 lb. of carrots from the garden.

The Good Spirit Beef 4-H Club grew, for donation, approximately 900 lb. of produce. Saskatchewan 4-H had brought back the initiative “4-H, Food, and You” to support the local food banks. A goal was set to donate 3,000 lb. of food to the local food banks challenge.

Our club had chosen three places in need of the donations. They were our local Filling the Gap Food Bank located in Canora, the Salvation Army in Yorkton and the Yorkton Outreach Centre.

As we delivered our much-needed produce we were given tours of these foodbanks and were able to ask questions.

Our club members feel that this year we made a huge difference locally in our community. We will see what comes up this next year.
