2020 was an unprecedented year with the Covid-19 pandemic impacting every country around the globe and hitting Canada in March. It’s been a year of challenges and difficulty as communities work together to try and move past this tough situation.

Community has been a pillar for overcoming hardships brought on by the pandemic in Canada. As the year reaches its end, support for local businesses and trust within community that rules and regulations are being followed to keep residents safe have been as important as ever.

Mayors around the area are thankful for their strong communities uniting to help each other and keep each other healthy during this difficult time.

Moosomin Mayor Larry Tomlinson says 2020 was strenuous as communities struggled to keep everything open and progressing as much as possible while following the public health orders.

“It’s been difficult! I don’t know what other word you could use for it,” said Tomlinson. “It’s been difficult and certainly different, that’s for sure!”

Tomlinson is thankful Moosomin hasn’t seen much in terms of Covid-19 cases and he credits the residents of the town for doing what has needed to be done.

“I think our community has handled it pretty well to be honest,” he said. “We went through most of the year without any cases in town, and I think over the last month or two we only have a few. I think people here have been pretty careful with making sure their masks are up. Everybody has been careful here and it’s nice to see everybody following the rules.”

One positive to come out of the situation has been the increased focus on shopping local and showing support to businesses in the Moosomin community says Tomlinson.

“I think there’s probably been more local shopping here than in some of the other places,” he said. “There’s probably some more online shopping, but as far as the local level, the community has been supporting businesses fairly well. We have a strong community and we taken in quite a wide area so we’re pretty fortunate.

“I’m looking forward to 2021, provided it’s better! I think at this point there’s still uncertainty if we’ll ever get out of this, but hopefully it gets better as the year goes on.”
