At their regular most recent meeting, the town of Rocanville carried a motion to enter into an agreement with Nutrien Rocanville to make much-needed upgrades to the town’s lagoon.

“The turning circle dump site is being eroded and under the current regulations, we need a proper spillway,” said Administrator Monica Pethick. “There was never a dump site created there when the lagoon expansion took place and it was eroding the side of the lagoon.”

Nutrien offered to build the new lagoon spillway and bring the lagoon up to code in exchange for being able to dump at the lagoon free of charge. The total cost quoted by Core Industrial Services, the contractor for the project, will be $100,849.10.

The upgrades will include a new spillway and the 12-inch sub base, bringing the lagoon up to the Environmental Protection Act code.

Demolition Permit

A motion to grant a permit for the demolition of an old empty house on 1008 Railway Avenue was carried. Pentecostal Assemblies bought the house and the lot it stands on and will convert it into additional parking for the Pentecostal church and a green space for future outdoor events.

Ball diamond fundraiser

The Minor Ball Club approached the council with a donation request to put on a fundraising drive-in movie event sometime in September. The total cost for putting on the event will be $1,700. This includes renting a screen, transmitter and projector for a one-off drive-in movie night. The town declined a donation because the cost seems too high.

“We are saying it is questionable whether they will actually make money,” said Administrator Monica Pethick.

“It would be cheaper to buy the stuff,” said Councillor Stan Langley.

“We declined, but if they were to go and buy the screen and equipment, we would certainly give them some money,” said Pethick.

The idea being that then the equipment can be used by other groups for other events during the year.

No tax abatement for new home

Amanda Godwin bought a property in town and wants to demolish the old house and build a brand new one. She asked if this will qualify for residential tax abatement, and the answer was no.

“The tax abatement is only granted on new developments on empty lots,” said Administrator Monica Pethick.

Purple Martin birdhouse has been erected

The Purple Martin birdhouse that was donated to the town has been erected by the Legion Cenotaph.

“We were going to put it in a different area, but apparently when they are nesting they are quite aggressive, so we put it by the Cenotaph because by the time we get to the Remembrance Day service, the birds will have flown the nest and not be near as protective,” said Administrator Monica Pethick.

New bylaws

To ensure that there will be money for pool repairs and upgrades in the future, the town asked Administrator Monica Pethick to create a bylaw for future councillors to put away a small surplus each year towards funding.

The Mail-in-Ballot Bylaw was also updated and received three readings at the regular meeting.

“That was just an update to legislation because the Local Government Act has been rewritten since the last bylaw was created,” said Pethick.
