Vancouver company fined after workplace injury

Weyerhaeuser Company Limited of Vancouver was fined $182,000 on June 23, 2020 after pleading guilty to one count under The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996 on November 26, 2019, in Hudson Bay Provincial Court.

The British Columbia based company pleaded guilty to contravening clause 12(a) of the regulations (being an employer, fail in the provision and maintenance of a plant, systems of work and working environments that ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of the employer’s workers, resulting in the injury of a worker).

Charges stem from an incident on October 5, 2017, in Hudson Bay, where a worker sustained a serious injury after being impacted by a forklift.

The company was fined $130,000 with a $52,000 surcharge.
