Saskatoon cleans up after high winds down power lines, topple trees

SASKATOON — The city of Saskatoon is cleaning up after winds that hit almost 90 kilometres an hour toppled trees and cut power to four neighbourhoods on Thursday night.

The city's director of emergency planning says about 20 of 50 trees that fell landed on power lines and prompted emergency fire calls.

Pamela Goulden-McLeod says power was restored to the Buena Vista, Queen Elizabeth and Erindale communities, as well as to the West Industrial area in about 4 1/2 hours.

She says crews are assessing the damage and removing debris from roads, paths and vehicles.

Arborists are among city workers fanning out to checked on trees and to secure hanging branches that could still fall.

Goulden-McLeod says the cleanup has so far involved 60 city employees. (CJWW)
