SYLVANIA — A local barrel racer that was a fixture on the high school rodeo circuit is continuing her barrel racing career in college.

Amy Bowditch, who’s from Sylvania, is on the New Mexico State University rodeo team.

After placing third in barrel racing at the National Intercollegiate Rodeo’s Grand Canyon region, Bowditch competed in the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo. held from June 9 to 15.

She placed 16th, with 14.90 seconds in the first go, 14.89 in the second and 14.53 in the third.

“I was happy with it,” she said. “I was hoping to make the short go, which is the top 12. But I was 0.2 seconds off of making the short go.”

This year, Bowditch is riding a 10-year-old horse named Basil.

Bowditch is taking business and economics at New Mexico State, which is based in Las Cruces, NM.

“I got a rodeo scholarship to be on the team there and I wanted to go somewhere with nice weather,” she said. “I really like it there and I have three years left of school, so I plan to stay there for the rest of my years.”

As a member of the team – and the only Canadian this year – Bowditch practises every week.

“It was nice to have a team atmosphere to make friends and everything,” she said. “I feel like having a team to practice with and everything also helps me get better at rodeo.”
