Bombers falter in home stretch, lose 3-2 to Broncos

The Flin Flon Bombers played a great game in Humboldt Thursday night - for about 58 minutes, that is. Two goals in the last two minutes doomed the Bombers to a 3-2 loss.

The Bombers started on the right foot, with the team's ever-productive first line making an early entry on the scoresheet. Cole Rafuse put home his sixth of the season four minutes in, with Donavan Houle-Villeneuve adding another goal, his league-leading 11th on the season, halfway through the first.

Humboldt got on the board courtesy of captain Graysen Cameron, who scored later in the first to make it 2-1 Bombers.

With no offence through the second and most of the third period, the Bombers looked almost assured of two points until Connor Nolan ruined the party. The 18-year-old forward scored his first SJHL goal with 1:36 left on the clock to tie the game.

The Broncos, unwilling to just play for overtime, rushed back into the zone right after Nolan's goal. Less than thirty seconds after tying the game up, the Broncos sealed it, with Braiden Koran beating Bomber goalie Matt Sankner to give Humboldt the final lead.

Sankner, playing his second SJHL game, took the L despite making 35 saves. Brendan Forman made 30 saves in the Humboldt net, earning the win.

The Bombers had goalie Jacob Delorme back in the lineup, but kept the team's starter on the bench as he recovers from a lingering injury. With defencemen Jack Michell and Ryder Richmond both out of the lineup with injuries of their own, the Bombers looked for some help from the AAA midget ranks, calling up defender Marek Schneider from the Prince Albert Mintos.

The loss puts the Bombers at 7-3-0-0 on the season, good enough to tie them with Nipawin for second in the Sherwood Division and third in the league overall.

Flin Flon will continue to take their show on the road, playing two more road games Friday and Saturday night, first stopping in the Battlefords for a date with the Stars before meeting up with the Yorkton Terriers.
