Petruic powers Terriers to road win

The Yorkton Hyundai Terriers are still a win short of .500, but a win Friday has kept the team atop the Viterra Division of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

The Terriers sit with a record of 8-9 for 16 points one better than Weyburn in second with 15 points, with Melville third with 12 and Estevan fourth with 11.

The weekend win came Friday in Wilcox on a visit to the Notre Dame Hounds.

Chantz Petruic, with his 16th goal of the season gave the Terriers the lead on the powerplay at 14:05. It was the only goal of the opening 20-minutes.

At 2:08 of the second the Terriers doubled their lead on a goal by Ryan Ries with the lone goal of the frame. Petruic recorded an assist.

In the third Alec Zawatsky made it 3-0 on a goal again assisted by Petruic.

Curtis Wiebe finally broke the secret of Ryan Ouellette in the Terrier net to make it a 3-1 contest. Ouellette would allow only the one gaol while facing 37-shots in the game.

The game was salted away by a Petruic goal, his fourth point of the contest at 16:40 to round out a 4-1 win.

CANALTA HOTELS SJHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:  Chantz Petruic, Yorkton Terriers
1999 F Chantz Petruic (Moose Jaw SK) led the Terriers to two wins this past week, scoring 2-goals and 4-assists in 2-games played.  Petruic is tied for the league lead in goals with 17 and is one point off the league lead in that category with 32.  He’s factored in on an astounding 57% of all Terrier goals this season.  He got his week started with a two helper night against Melfort on Tuesday and then scored twice and set up two others in a 4-1 Yorkton win over Notre Dame on Friday.  Runner-up:  Chase Haygarth, Flin Flon.

MAYFAIR DIAGNOSTICS SJHL DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK:  Nolan Kadachuk, Melfort Mustangs
1999 D Nolan Kadachuk (Melfort SK) has emerged as a prolific offensive defenseman in his final Junior ‘A’ season and he put up three points this past week, including two assists at Yorkton on Tuesday and another assist on Friday as the Mustangs got back on the winning track by defeating Nipawin.  Kadachuk has 3-goals and 15-assists in 18-games overall and is second in the league amongst blueliners in scoring.  Runner-up:  Matthew Fletcher, Battlefords.

SASKTEL SJHL GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK:  Noah Decottignies, Weyburn Red Wings
2000 G Noah Decottignies (Calgary AB) has been a great surprise story this season and he continued his fine play posting back to back victories over the Estevan Bruins this past weekend.  Decottignies stopped 23-of-24 on Friday night as the Wings eked out a 2-1 win and then 36-of-37 on Saturday night in what ended up being an identical 2-1 win, this time in overtime.  That translates to an 0.98-GAA and .967-SPCT.  He’s 5-3-0-and-1 overall and is sixth in the league with a 2.32-GAA and fifth with a .931-SPCT.  Runner-up:  Ryan Ouellette, Yorkton.

DIRECTWEST SJHL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:  Karter McNarland, Humboldt Broncos
2003 F Karter McNarland (Saskatoon SK) goes into this week riding a four game point scoring streak, capped by a 2-goal, 1-assist performance on Saturday night in Melville that helped the Broncos post a 4-1 victory.  McNarland also had goals in an overtime win versus Notre Dame on Tuesday and potted one in a loss to Flin Flon on Thursday and now has 5-goals and 10-assists in 16-games overall.  McNarland is one of the most impactful 16-year-old rookies in recent memory in the SJHL.  Runner-up:  Mason Kaspick, Flin Flon.
