The Yorkton Cardinals have just over two weeks left of their regular season. The past few weeks have been tough on the team as they’ve lost a few strong pitchers, one being Kody Rock.

Still, the team is fighting through the adversity in hopes of making the playoffs as they’re only a few games out of the place they need to be.

In the past week, the Cards have played seven games in the Western Major Baseball League. They racked up two wins and five losses from those games, pushing their record to 9-23.

On Friday night, the Cardinals picked up an impressive win against the Regina Red Sox, who hold a 20-9 record.

The Cards got an early lead in the game and were able to hold it throughout the duration of play. Bryson Spagnuolo was awarded the win for the Cardinals, pitching for seven innings.

After that game, head coach Bryn Biancalana explained the hurdle they’re facing with a short bench at the moment.

“We’ve definitely struggled. We’ve had tough luck,” he said, mentioning the few pitchers they’ve lost due to injury or other opportunities.

“Our backs have been against the wall a little bit. We’ve been thin. But we’ve been recruiting and trying to get a few more pitchers in here. We possibly have one coming,” he explained.

With playoffs approaching, Biancalana said they need to pitch well if they want to make it.

“Our pitching has been better over the last few games, it’s improving. That’s our goal right now.”

But despite the hurdles, he said reaching the playoffs is definitely possible for the Yorkton team.

“I think we can definitely make it. I see guys improving on an individual basis,” he said. “The tides can turn in this game quick.”

On Monday night, the Cardinals hosted a game against the Moose Jaw Miller Express at Jubilee Park. Moose Jaw won 2-0.

The game was scoreless heading into the eighth inning and then Moose Jaw took control.

The Miller Express scored a run in each of the final two innings.

Kevin Connolly had three hits and a walk for the Cardinals.

Yorkton starter Bryce Mulcah pitched seven innings, striking out nine. DJ Depiero took over in the eighth inning and was tagged with the loss.

The Cardinals will play on home turf at Jubilee Park again on Saturday, July 15 as they host Edmonton. The game will start at 7:05 p.m. On Sunday, Edmonton will be at Jubilee Park again for an afternoon game starting at 2:05 p.m.v
