The Yorkton Bongo Volleyball 16U team wrapped up their season at the provincials in Warman, Sk.

The team finished the round robin in first place, but lost to the Regina Volleyball Club in the semi-final. They then faced the ACVC Impact in the bronze medal match, but lost in three sets, for a final result of fourth place.

For coach Dion Pfeifer, it was a good season overall, especially considering that it’s a relatively young team, with only four 16 year olds, and they were going against older and more experienced teams.

“Everybody improved a lot.”

Pfeifer admits that finishing fourth was a disappointment for the team, as they had beaten the other teams in the finals before and expected to get into the finals.

“But they did well, they finished top three or four in their division in every tournament, and won a tournament in Kipling as well... Pretty successful year for the first year of the older team.”

One highlight of the season overall was at the start, with the first men’s Sask Cup hosted in Yorkton. Pfeifer said it was rewarding to have a chance to play in front of the home town crowd in the city.

With a young team, as well as players from the talented 14U team aging into the older team, Pfeifer is optimistic about the club’s chances next year.

“We will definitely have a strong 16U team next year, probably in the top four in the province I’m hoping.”

The hope in the future is to continue building the Bongo Volleyball club. This is the first year for the 16U team, and Yorkton did well for just starting out. Pfeifer believes that as players get more experienced the team will be able to better compete with the more experienced teams in the province.

“I think we will be back up there.”
