Ladies rec hockey needs players

An effort is being made to launch a ladies' recreational hockey team in the city, and they are in need of skaters.

"It's our first year," said Amber Zaharia, who said they are getting together once a week at present for an hour of ice time with the hopes it leads to the formation of at least one team in the city.

"If we can't get enough out nobody will be able to play," she said, adding at present they have a core group of eight, but need more recruits.

Zaharia said the team is truly for all levels, noting a couple of the women coming out have never played hockey beyond 'the pond' level and that was several years ago.

Women do not even need to worry about equipment as there is now a bank of used gear in the city which they can access what they need from, said Zaharia.

Zaharia said there are now 20-players in womens' rec hockey in Melville, so she is hopeful they can recruit more players locally.
