The Yorkton Lady Gridders travelled down to Moosomin to face the Generals in the first game of the season for both teams on Friday night.

The girls squared off under the lights for what was an extremely exciting game to watch with the Lady Gridders coming out victorious 41-26 over the Generals.

Moosomin opened the scoring early in the first quarter as they unveiled their new offensive weapon, a speedy little running back, who took a long off tackle run to the house.

The Lady Gridder Defense made some quick adjustments and were able to hold the offense in check playing with a bend-don’t-break mentality.

Moosomin was only able to score another offensive TD in the game with the likes of linebacker Makayla Pelletier roaming sideline to sideline making tackles, and Caelan MacLean always vigilant for Moosomin’s runs up the middle.

Defensive line personnel Shay Pelletier and Tamara Exner were constant havoc in the General backfield tallying sacks and big hits that could be heard on both sidelines.

The Lady Gridder offense looked dangerous as always.

The Lady Gridders O-line was able to give their weapons the time they needed going up against the always tough Generals defensive line and blitzing linebackers.

Running back Brooke Hannotte had 3 rushing touchdowns, with two of them being in the range of 70-yard runs each.

Quarterback Bronwynn Money showed some Patrick Maholmes like scrambling skills as she kept plays alive and ran for long first downs on a couple of broken plays. Another being a deep pass to right tackle Alyssa Sander for the latter’s first receiving touchdown in her career.

The highlight of the game for parents and players  came late in the fourth as running back Kasey McCombs, who opened the scoring for the Gridders with a long td run of her own, was able to kick a late game field goal, the Lady Gridder’s first ever field goal in team history.  The cheering from the Lady Gridder bench never louder than on the successful kick. In all the running back had a td, a field goal, and four extra points on converts…not a bad fantasy stat line at all.

The rematch is set to take place this Saturday at Century Field.
