After a weekend split the Rawtec Maulers sit tied for sixth in the Saskatchewan AAA Midget Hockey League with the Saskatoon Contacts with 24 points based on a record of 11-12-1-1. The Notre Dame Hounds lead the loop with 41 points.

Saturday the Mauler offence was stymied in Moose Jaw as the host Generals took a 5-0 victory.

After a scoreless first period Jaxon Georget gave the home team something to cheer about scoring a pair.

In the third Brendan Kemp popped back-to-back goals and Cody Davis added the Generals fifth marker to round out scoring.

“They chipped away at us,” said Kevin Rawlick, Maulers coach and general manager. “It wasn’t one of those games where it felt like 5-0.”

Dakota Berezowski took the loss in the Mauler net facing 38-shots, while Jake Davidson had the shut-out for Moose Jaw turning away all 28-shots he faced.

“I wasn’t disappointed in the boys,” Rawlick said.

The same teams met again Sunday, and the game again started with a scoreless first period.

Brendan Kemp and Georget scored to give the Generals a lead in the second, the latter goal on the powerplay.

Mackenzie Walkerton and Ryder Pierson responded to tie the game for Yorkton with goals less than two-minutes apart. The Pierson goal was with a man advantage.

Yorkton took the lead with a powerplay goal in the third from Danton Lheureux, only to have Cody Davis respond to tie the game for the hone team.

“The guys dug real deep,” Rawlick said.

It would be the powerplay that would decide the game as Aiden Bulych scored for the Maulers with only 1:40 on the clock for a 4-3 win.

Jordan Schmuland faced 45-shots in the Yorkton net to earn the win.

Last Wednesday

The Notre Dame Hounds visited the Farrell Agencies Arena Dec. 6, jumping out to a 2-0 lead through 20-minutes on goals by Nolan Renwick and Coalson Wolford, both powerplay markers.

It would be another man-advantage marker by Wolford early in the third that extended the Hound lead to 3-0.

Keanan Sperling finally put Yorkton on the board, followed by a goal by Jordan Repsch which cut the margin to 3-2.

Luke Mylymok would add a fourth goal for the Hounds to round out second period scoring.

In the third, Stanley Cooley extended the Hound lead to 5-2 only 21-seconds into the third.

Mackenzie Walkington would get one back for Yorkton to make it 5-3, before Brad Morrissey salted away a Notre Dame win with an empty net goal to make it a 6-3 final.

Jordan Schmuland was in the Yorkton net facing 33-shots.

Up next

Yorkton hosts the Notre Dame Argos at the Farrell Agencies Arena tonight (Wednesday).

“[We need to] maintain the momentum going forward,” Rawlick said.

On the weekend the Maulers head to North Battleford to take on the Stars in a pair of games Saturday and Sunday.
