The Sacred Heart Saints boys’ soccer team ran roughshod over their competition at their home tournament this past weekend. The Saints captured first place without surrendering a goal over three games.

Off the pitch the members of the Sacred Heart Saints boys’ soccer team are perfect examples as to what being a Saint means.

They’re respectful, kind, and always willing to lend a hand.

On the pitch however, they’re competitive, blood-thirsty and downright dominating, as proven by their performance at their home tournament this past weekend, where they scored a total of 28 goals while keeping the opposition off the scoreboard in all three games en route to the tournament title.

The Saints opened the tournament up against Kipling, dismantling the Magyars 11-0 to move to the semi-finals on Saturday, where they met the Moose Jaw – Vanier Vikings.

Vanier proved to be little competition for the Saints, as Nick and Ben Fetsch once again led the attack in a 9-0 victory, sending the Saints to the tournament final against the Notre Dame Hounds.

Just like the Magyars and Vikings, the Hounds too proved to be no match for the high octane offence of the Saints, offering little resistance in what ended up being an 8-0 Sacred Heart victory.

Nearly every player scored for the Saints in the tournament, while keeper Michael Dobrowolski picked up the clean sheet in all three games.

Following the final game of the tournament Saints assistant coach Scott Hoffert told Yorkton This Week that while the competition might not have been what they were expecting, the three games did allow the Saints an opportunity to utilize their 2015 game plan. “What we’re working on this year is to play some possession soccer. We really want to have our kids moving the ball around and keeping possession of it both defensively and offensively,” offered Hoffert, continuing, “possession is a key to winning and this weekend really showed that we can do that well.”

Hoffert then added that while winning the home tournament is great, the real goal is bringing home a gold medal from provincials; something the Saints failed to do last year, losing to Lake Lenore 2-0 in the provincial final. “Last year we ended up playing against a very good Lake Lenore team. Our guys played really good too but we couldn’t get the win,” said Hoffert. “This year that’s what our goal is. We’re geared for winning a provincial championship. I truly believe we have the depth and the players to do that. Even our young guys are showing up and playing excellent games.

“These kids are coming up from minor soccer with tons of skill and knowledge. Our grade nines are playing excellent soccer so far and obviously our senior guys are really showing some great leadership and doing the same.”

The Saints will now move on to their next challenge this coming weekend, when they travel to Prince Albert to compete against larger schools in another soccer tournament ahead of the 2015 SHSAA 2A Regionals mid-October.
