It was a hot day on the thermometre today but the Saltcoats Lakers were even hotter on the baseball diamond.

The Lakers, who are hosting the 2019 13U Baseball Provincial Championship being hosted at the Saltcoats Regional Park this weekend, were coming off a win in game one of the event Friday, when they headed to the diamond to play Weyburn Beavers this morning.

“We pulled off a victory,” said Lakers coach Mike Farquharson in an interview with Yorkton This Week Saturday evening.

Wyatt Evans took the mound for the Lakers and kept the Beavers at bay.

“He (Evans) gave us almost five complete innings,” said Farquharson.

On offence Cole Steiner and Nikkie Devins played well, said their coach, who then reiterated “the star was definitely Wyatt Evans.”

In the end the Lakers had their second win, a 10-7 win, as Farquharson recalled.

The afternoon game today for the Lakers had them taking on the Southey Eagles.

“They were a young team, a small team, but boy could they hit,” said Farquharson.

Kyla Farquharson started for the Lakers, throwing 30-pitches before being relieved by Alex Morrison, with Luke Morgan finishing the game.

He finished up and gave us a chance to comeback,” said Farquharson, adding “we were able to do that in the last inning,” with the Lakers emerging with a 13-10 win.

With three wins in three games Saltcoats finished round robin play with the best record in their pool, and in the entire tournament.

The Lakers will now take to the field at 9 a.m. tomorrow, (Sunday), looking for a win to propel them to the gold medal final. They will face the Humboldt Dodgers.

In the other semi final the Weyburn Beavers take on the Lloydminster Twins.

The winners of the two semi final games will meet for 2019 13U Baseball Provincial Championship gold at 12 noon at the regional park diamonds.
