SHHS athletics awards banquet held

The Sacred Heart High School sports teams held their fall banquet last week and handed out awards for each of their sports.


The Sacred Heart High School sports teams held their fall banquet last week and handed out awards for each of their sports.

Girls soccer, boys soccer, junior and senior football, boys and girls (senior and junior) volleyball, golf and cross country awards were handed out.

Award winners were broken down by sport.

Girls soccer: Rita Fetsch (MVP offence), Kaitlin Inglis (MVP defence), Leta Perepeluk (St. Sebastian), Hailey Richards and Jenna Sahulka (co-winners of the Most Improved Player award).

Junior football: Cameron Peepeetch (MVP offence), Clark Bazin (MVP defence), Daniel McCoshen (Lineman of the Year), Kylan Shea (St. Sebastian), Rawlee Wyatt (Most Improved), Caleb Sutter (team MVP).

Junior boys volleyball: Samuel Lohnes (MVP), Tannum Wyonzec (Most Improved), Jacob Holinaty (St. Sebastian).

Golf Jessie Richards (top female), Dylan Johnson (top male).

Johnson, a first time winner in both football and golf, admitted a little surprise when his name was called, even added that he thought someone else who has been his teammate on several different sports this season, thought might get the honour.

"YeahI thought Preston was going to get it. I was pretty happy."

For the golf recognition, Johnson said it wasn't the greatest season for him especially since districts were a little bit of a challenge; he noted that individual accomplishments aren't quite the same as the team championships. The SHHS senior boys volleyball team wasn't far off from a top-three finish over the weekend in Wilkie.

"Everything is a team sport. It's a whole team effort."

Senior girls volleyball Mariel Kotyk (MVP), Hanna Hansen and Lauren Leshchyshyn (Most Improved), Kristen Jonassen (Rookie of the Year), Brianna Ostafie (St. Sebastian).

Senior boys volleyball: Preston Liebrecht (MVP), Jared Buzinski (Most Improved), Jaedon Pellatt (Rookie of the Year), Brett Tuttosi (St. Sebastian).

Liebrecht, who captained the SHHS Saints boys' volleyball team to a 4A provincial championship berth over the weekend, alongside Dylan Johnson and coach Curtis Moen. Winners of the Saints' athletics award winners were announced just before the volleyball team left for Wilkie and Liebrecht was named MVP just prior to. Continued on Page B6

"For volleyball, I did expect to win it (but) anybody could have won it because it's a team sport."

For football, he said, it's harder to win individual honours.

"For 40 + guys, it's harder to give an awardthat just shows we have so many good players."

Boys soccer: Anthony Fetsch (MVP), Carter MacKay (Most Improved), Bretten Hull (Rookie of the Year), Nathan Ruff (St. Sebastian).
