The Yorkton Terriers made some trades throughout the summer that brought in a few new faces to this season’s roster.
Last Thursday, the Terriers held a press conference before their golf tournament fundraiser to introduce the new players to members of the media before the season begins.
Kyle Sargent was the first addition to the Terriers. Sargent came in exchange for former d-man Tyler Baier in June. The Terriers will be Sargent’s third SJHL team. He started with the Nipawin Hawks, then moved on to the Kindersley Klippers before coming to Yorkton.
Sargent said he will bring “size, toughness and leadership” to the team. He also added that he sees the ice well.
The Terriers will be starting the season with a relatively inexperienced defensive line, with Sargent and Cody Dubas as the only veteran SJHL defensemen. Sargent said he’s looking forward to holding a leadership role in that sense, and mentoring the younger players.
Next up to the stand was 20-year-old forward Will Brochu from Quebec. He played at Brewster Academy, a prep school in New Hampshire, for the two previous seasons. This will be his first season in the SJHL. He said he’s looking forward to the exposure that the SJHL has to offer for his future. He’s a speedy player, and said he’s “not scared of anything” when it comes to being aggressive on the ice.
The final two players to take the stand were Slater Strong and Dalton Ossman. The two players were recently traded to Yorkton from the AJHL in exchange for Mckenzie and Carson Welke. Strong said he’s expecting the SJHL to be a little more physical than he’s used to in the AJHL, but he’s not afraid to “lay some body” when he needs to.
Ossman referred to himself as an all around player, who chips in both offensively and defensively.
He also assured the crowd that he’s pretty physical, which seems to be a common trend in the new additions to the team.
Finally, the Terriers new team captain Dexter Robinson chatted with the media about his new role with the team. The 20-year-old forward is going into his third year with the Terriers, and he’s proud of his new title.
“It means a lot to me,” he said. He admits that it adds a little more pressure to him, but he’s hoping that fans won’t see much change in his game on the ice.
He also credited former Terriers captain, Corwin Stevely, saying he learned a lot from him as a leader.
