The Yorkton Legion track club traveled to Saskatoon on June 18 and 19 to compete in the Sask. Athletics Provinvial Championships and Provincial team trials for the Western Canada Games.

The meet was a chance for 9 local athletes to compete and advance to the upcoming summer meets. Those being the Canadian Junior Nations in Winnipeg, July 8-10; Try-Meet in Regina, July 18-19 and the Western Canada Games in Kamloops, BC, August 5-10.

The four athletes that will be joining Team Saskatchewan to compete at the Western Canada Games are Avery Westberg, Matt Johnson, Preston Liebrecht and Stephanie Sawchuk. Advancing to the Junior Nations, by placing first or second in their event, are Avery Westberg 1500, 3000; Preston Liebrecht in 100, 200, HJ; Kyla Bassingthwaite in HT, DT, JT; and Stephanie Sawchuk in HJ, TJ, 100.

Our younger athletes; Matthijs Wenning, Brooke Mentanko, Emily Kruger and Breanna Melnechenko had an impressive meet bringing home a total of 7 medals between the 4 of them. For them, the summer brings Legion Camp July 5-9 in Saskatoon and the Try-Meet in Regina in July. We wish all our athletes success in running as they head out to their respected meets during the summer months.
