Tug-Of-Oar

Experienced and new paddlers will have a chance to play tug-of-war in the water at the Gallagher Centre this weekend as part of a fundraiser.

The Yorkton Canoe Kayak Club (YCKC) is hosting an indoor dragon boat competition at the Gallagher Center water park on Feb. 11 starting at 8:30 a.m.

The competition, nicknamed “Tug-of-Oar,” separates participants into teams of four. The groups, armed with paddles, sit in a dragon boat, facing their opposing team. They paddle against each other and the team that covers the most distance in 30 seconds will be declared the winner.

“You’re fighting for inches or feet,” said Jessica Riley, head coach with YCKC and an organizer for the event. “It’s a great visual for people to see.”

The competition is raising funds for a new roof at the YCKC clubhouse.

“We’ve been trying to do it for the last few years and funds just always manage to go to other things,” Riley said. “This is, hopefully, a fundraiser directed at [the roof] and [it’s] a fun way to be creative.”

The entrance fee for the “Tug-of-Oar” is $40. This fee includes a membership with YCKC for the season.

[This fundraiser’s] kind of a recruitment for the summer [season],” Riley said.

YCKC is accepting applications for the dragon boat competition until Friday, Feb. 9. Anyone interested in registering for the event can email Riley at yorktoncanoekayakclub@yahoo.ca.
