The YRHS held their 4th Annual Archery Shoot took place over the weekend in their home gymnasium.

Numerous thank yous went out to individuals for being a well-run tournament.

They include: Mike and Leann Jarvis of Bird Dog Archery, the Yorkton Regional High School, the Good Spirit School Division and the many volunteers for their help in running the events, as well as the parents of the YRHS archery team.

It was another good day for the team representing the YRHS, says Darren Wandy, coach, as well as the team representing Columbia Elementary School in Yorkton, says Don Trevena, co-coach of Columbia.

"My kids won the event," says Wandy of the division they competed out of, which was the senior high school event. Columbia took top honours in the junior high event.

The Yorkton Regional High School shooters finished the day-long event with 840 points, a number Wandy said he was clearly pleased with; Columbia totalled 859 points, which wasn't bad for a first-time team entry in the event, claims Trevena.

YRHS standouts on the day included Lea Burnard, a Gr. 10 student who may have surprised everyone including herself, when she finished with 292 points.
The maximum score for this event is 300, says both Wandy and Trevena.

"No, I did not see that coming," attests Burnard, but added she knew that she was on the right track following her first few flights. She has only been shooting archery for about two years and added she intends to stick with it through to Gr. 12.

Eric Pedwell, another high-scorer representing the Regional, shot 282, says Wandy.

The archery shoot included just over 200 students representing all different regions of the province. Wandy added that everyone that expressed interest, showed up to compete and noted that everything went ahead according to schedule, and there were no extra shootoffs required.

"It was a good day."

Brayden Jarvis of MC Knoll Elementary School, had a good day too, shooting 271.

Columbia's team did well for their first archery tournament as an organized team, claims Trevena.

Close to 20 kids took part in the shoot. Expectations were not certain going into it, Trevena pointed out.

"Really, this was their first tournament," he said. The team finished first in the Gr. 7-8 elementary school flite. Exact point totals weren't available in time for press.

But he said he was really contented by his team's results.

"There were a lot of schools (there). It was a big competition. I'm really excited about it."

Columbia School shooter Veronica Pinette likely had the majority of the experience going into the YRHS shoot; Trevena told YTW she is a provincial archery champion where she won a silver bow.

Trevena said the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) provincials could be a welcome opportunity for her to continue to display her shooting talent.

The Columbia team practices regularly in their gymnasium, with two this week, one of which is tonight at 3:45 p.m.
