YUFC U12 girls ‘golden’ at Golden Boy

Yorkton United Football Club’s under 12 girls Tornadoes captured gold in the annual Golden Boy soccer tournament in Winnipeg from Feb. 17–20, 2017.

The girls’ roster was bolstered with two guest players from Weyburn, Nyla Prochinsky and Taya Schmidt. Both girls proved to be valuable additions and fit in well with the Yorkton girls.

 In the first game of the tournament, the Tornadoes defeated Southdale Tsunami from Winnipeg 6-0. Angela Fetsch recorded a hat trick with singles coming from Nyla Prochinsky, Carlene McKay and Kirsi Kitch. Avery Bond earned the shutout in net.

 In game two, the girls were up against East St Paul also of Winnipeg, and this time came away with an 8-1 victory. Avery Bond, Angela Fetsch and Nyla Prochinsky scored two each and Sierra Lawson and Halima Kasin added singles.

 In their third game, the Tornadoes met their toughest competition of the tournament, but defeated Minnedosa 1-0 on a goal by Kyra Pelly. Carlene McKay earned the shutout.

 The three wins advanced the girls to the finals. They met Minnedosa again, and were victorious in the final game 4-0. Nyla Prochinsky scored a pair, Taya Schmidt and Kyra Pelly each had one. Avery Bond had her second shutout of the tournament.

The girls had a dominant performance, outscoring their opposition 19 goals for to just 1 goal against.

Strong goal keeping from Avery Bond, Kori Severight and Carlene McKay, combined with solid defense from Angela Fetsch, Kirsi Kitch, Halima Kasim, Sierra Lawson and Nyla Prochinsky contributed to allowing only one goal in the four games.

 This tournament concludes the indoor season for the Yorkton U12 girls who ended their indoor season having only lost one game. The team looks forward to the outdoor season and another opportunity to hone their soccer skills playing ‘the beautiful game’.
